Finding the Word of God in today’s news
The literature
you are going to
read this month
is absolutely
remarkable.
It spans four
centuries in
the history of
biblical Israel and witnesses to the
most critical period of its history—
including exile to Babylon—in which
its main theological traditions took
shape. You will also find in this scroll
of the Twelve prophets twelve different
personalities, life experiences,
political situations, and approaches
to the God who is at the very center
of Israel’s life.
This literature has not aged a
bit. The positions taken by Amos,
Hosea, Micah, Zephaniah, and all
of the Twelve prophets on social
justice, on righteous political leadership,
on reconciliation of nations,
and on true religion, were topical
when they were voiced in their
original setting in the 8th, 7th, 6th
centuries B.C. and later. Yet, when
you start reading them today, you
will easily make connections with
today’s breaking news and major
issues for the future of this planet
and of humankind.
